The rise of ambient agent

Are "Ambient Agents" just hype—a new shiny trend?

I watched the recent interview with Moveworks CEO Bhavin Shah on TODAY IN TECH and, while I was annoyed at this newly coined term "Ambient Agents", the more I watched, the more it made sense. But here's the thing, it does not make sense as a distinct entity but more like a framework to follow. Let me explain.

From Bhavin's description, an Ambient Agent is an AI Agent (LLM) which has enough autonomy to watch your business as a whole and to act before you even notice there is an issue somewhere.

The idea is first to be connected to your whole infrastructure, all your tools, all your logs, all your data. Then it starts to notice patterns that diverge from the expected, in other words, anomalies that crave to be fixed. Finally, it comes to you with an observation, its reasoning, and a solution to fix the issue immediately.

The core idea behind this is to teach pattern recognition instead of brittle and rigid automation that breaks every week from minor changes. And while I believe that's far easier said than done, it yields very interesting questions that will help you to tackle and implement robust automation in your company.

A majority of companies don't look at their logs, can't manage IT permissions properly and have no clue how much money leaks from forgotten subscriptions. If you've mastered these basics, ask yourself: how far have you embraced cloud infrastructure? Have you already built bridges between systems?

A last glance at Ambient Agents, I see an important lesson—You can't seek efficient automation if you're on shaky foundations. Solve basics now that's where you'll reclaim real time and money.
